Kindergarten

When I was in my Kindergarten class, I did a one-week Author Study on Dr. Seuss.  The students had a wonderful time learning about Dr. Seuss and reading so many of his books.  Here are some of the things that we did.

We read The Cat in Hat and talked about all the rhyming words that we heard.  They made Cat in the Hat hats and made their own -at words.  Don't they look great?!?!?!

The students love to write in their journals.  After making their hats, they wrote about what they would do if the Cat in the Hat showed up at their house.  Here is one of the student's entries:

Making ABC books is one of my favorite things to do with students.  After reading Dr. Seuss's ABC book, we made our own class ABC book.  Each student got to draw a different letter out of a bag.  They said the name of the letter and the sound that it makes.  Then they drew a picture of two things that start with that letter.  I compiled everyone's letter page and put them together in a book.  Here are a couple of pages:

We also read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.  Students made their own addition number sentences that add up to 10.  They got to choose how many fish to color red and how many to color blue.  We put them all together (kind of  like a quilt) to display in the hallway.  Check them out.

We also read Green Eggs and Ham.  This was familiar to most students, and they were full of laughter throughout the story.  Our cafeteria served green eggs and ham for lunch that day, so everyone had a chance to try some - if they wanted to try it.  We made a survey chart for how the students thought the green eggs and ham tasted.

We read Oh the Places You Will Go! and talked about what they wanted to be when they grow up.  Some students want to be veterinarians, others want to be rock stars, princesses, dog catchers, and "hair cutters."  Here is a picture of one student's hot air balloon who wants to be a doctor.

We wrote and illustrated about these jobs on hot air balloons to go with the theme from the book.  Here is a picture of the bulletin board with all of their ideas:

We read I Am Not Going to Get Up Today.  The students were very vocal about some of the things that they would do if they could stay in bed all day.  They even wrote about it in their journals.  Here is one entry:

We ended the week by reading Bartholmew and the Oobleck.  This was a real hit with the students.  After reading, we actually made some oobleck.  The students loved visiting the Science Lab and making the ooey, gooey mess.  After making the oobleck, we made a class Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting our oobleck and the the oobleck from the book.  I thought they made some great connections.

It was a wonderful week!!  Dr. Seuss is such a timeless author, and my students loved reading his stories.  What a great way to get students interested in reading!!  This was also a great opportunity to do some cross-curricular activities. We had some reading, writing, math, and science throughout the week.
